Baptisms

BaptismThe Holy Baptism of a child or adult is a joyful time when we celebrate welcoming a new brother or sister into the family of God!

If you are interested in having your child baptized at Lord of Life Church, please come to worship on Sundays at 8:00 or 10:30 a.m. That is the first step toward discerning if Lord of Life is the right church home for you and your family, and the place where you would like to grow in faith along with your child.

It is expected that at least one parent of the child to be baptized is a member of Lord of Life Lutheran Church. Parents make promises to raise the child within the family of the church, bring the child to worship, teach them the faith, and bring them to Sunday School. Therefore, it is essential that the family have a church home to which they've made a commitment. It is also expected that they are regular in their worship attendance before and after the baptism takes place.

Holy Baptism is a sacrament of the church. Except in the case of extreme emergencies where a person's life is in danger, baptisms are congregational experiences and are scheduled by the Pastor to be held at a regular Sunday service of worship.

A pre-baptismal conference must be held with the Pastor to discuss the nature of Holy Baptism and the promises made by the parents and godparents/sponsors with baptism.

At the baptism, the family is given the napkin and the candle that were used in the worship service, as well as a certificate of baptism. It is hoped that these would be kept by the family and shared with the child, particularly on their baptismal anniversaries, as he or she grows up.

The infant or child is not required to wear any special clothing for the baptism. It is traditional that a white baptismal gown may be worn to symbolize the forgiveness of sins and the new life that is given by God in baptism.

Normally, the Pastor of Lord of Life Lutheran Church officiates at all baptisms. At the Pastor's invitation, a relative who is a clergy person may assist the Pastor with the baptism.

No clergy or church fee is expected for a baptism.
